Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot

A $1.35 million painting, but looking at it with today’s eyes it looks a bit like something done on the computer. Especially the head. I guess it’s expensive just because it’s by a famous artist.

Portuguese coffee, secret subway room & times square

The Best Chocolate Cake in the World or “O Melhor Bolo de Chocolate do Mundo.” This Portuguese restaurant is on Spring st with Portuguese Paula saying it passes the test.  Did not take a pic of the cake but the cake and ice cream was good. Next I found the secret control room for the entire subway system at the Brooklyn Bridge stop. Looks less advanced than the Hal computer.

performing Philip Glass’ “Glassworks” at Le Poisson Rouge

Sunday evening I saw Signal and Michael Riesman perform Philip Glass’ “Glassworks” @ Le Poisson Rouge – 158 Bleecker Street, New York, NY 10012.
If you like Philip Glass, this was great. Yes I need a better camera.

Finally bettering myself

1. Saturday I went to an intro to meditation session at meditationinnewyork. Exactly what I need. I’m going to the same type of thing the next three Sundays.

2. Monday I started taking Japanese language classes at the Japan Society. I’ve flirted with the subject off and on for several years, but with no real devotion. This time something is different. I’m different or the class is different, or no It’s me.

Next things on the list are music lessons, an html course ….

The Power of Self, Portrait with my Father

artistswanted.org/christopherjameskull
I entered the image on the left in the Artists Wanted The Power of Self Competition. The image on the right is an interesting Sun drenched photo. The winners will be announced by March 12. Grand prize is 6 months living free at The Edge in Brooklyn or $7,007, international publicity and a big reception. A separate part of the competition was the People’s Choice Award. Thanks for the 22 votes. The People’s Choice was already decided with the top 15 vote getters going to photographers (there are 2 # 1s). http://www.artistswanted.org/self_peoples_choice.html

Giraffe Flowers

Dec 17 2009 Working on this concept for a mural idea. The murals would be on the two taller buildings. I think the deadline had passed, but I will still submit this anyway in a few days.

Guggenheim & Joshua Liner Gallery

Went to the Guggenheim for the first time Friday. The permanent artwork is great. Can’t take photos of the art though. Saturday went to Joshua Liner Gallery opening. Great art, my pics don’t do it justice. Go check it out. ALL of the sculptures sold. Made somewhere over $100 grand. Someone still has money out there. I also went to the Whitney Sunday, but not interesting. A few O’Keeffe’s were nice.

Exploring Again

After finishing the 56 String Movement mural I now have time to explore again. The first two pics are looking over the East River from Carl Schurz Park. Great park if you haven’t checked it out. My new new temporary apt is only 2 blocks from it.
Then exploring for possible gallery or coffee shop type places around Hell’s Kitchen I passed by The Colbert Report & The Daily Show.

Sunny hot day of painting

While I was resting across the street, kids standing in front of the Earth were debating what the land is on top of the Earth. That’s the kind of thing I wanted. They thought it was Greenland because its icy blue, but it’s that color because its in the Moons shadow. It’s Africa by the way. Way too much Sun painting for at least 4 hours in the 90+ degrees Monday. Actually felt a little sick afterwords and very sore now. Everything around the Earth is looking good, but I’m still struggling with the Earth itself.

Dick Cavett and Salvador Dali

I met Dick Cavett while painting the mural this morning. He had The Dick Cavett Show from 1968-75 and 1977-82. He told me about his 1970 tv interview with Salvador Dali. Pretty entertaining. Dali brought an anteater on stage with him. Cavett asked Dali if he got good reception, talking about the mustache. Cavett said he can’t find a drawing Dali drew for him at the interview. I tried to find the interview on youtube with no luck.

Here is a Dali replica I painted
for some friends a few years ago.

progress update on the 56th Street Mural

I probably won’t have to much variety on my Blog until I finish this mural -
I decided I needed to take this part of the mural in a different direction then my oil painting sketch. The dark background of the Bass island shape just wasn’t happening on the giant mural scale. The mural looks so much better now, but now my painting sketch isn’t happening. I’ve been having to carry my wet oil painting on the subway or taxi, so it’s gotten a bit muddy and has bits of the trees on that sidewalk stuck in the paint now.
